נבחן מול M14 ולא נבח,ר אומצה קת פלסטית ל M14.

נבחן AR15 מול M14 ושוב לא עבר.

שופר ל M16A1 ואז נכנס לשרות.

צרה עיקרית -בישול כדורים (גרם לנפגעים)

תוכנן A2 והמתין על המדף לאישור.

מלחמת יוה"כ היתה הטריגר להחלטה לקלוט את הA2.

כל מחסני הרזרבה של A1 הועברו למדינה קטנה בים התיכון.

והמחסנים החלו להתמלא ב A2.

עם גמר מילוי המחסנים עברו ל A2 במבצע לוגיסטי של מספר שבועות, והתחמושת הלבנה עברה להיות תחמושת אימונים.

כשהצבא הירדני רוכש ב 75 M16 הוא רוכש כבר A2.

גם אני חשבתי שסיפור MATTEL הוא אגדה אורבנית, עד שדיברתי עם אמריקאי שהיה לו רובה כזה בצבא האמריקאי בשנות השמונים. אשכרה MATTEL מוטבע על הפלסטיקה (לא "חריטות" של חיילים).

קיבלתי תשובה רשמית ממנהל המכירות העולמי של COLT, בזו הלשון:

When new models of weapons are proposed, built and tested, they receive model identifications usually starting with a number that is indicative of that series, i.e. M4 series, M16 series, etc... The M-16 was originally given that name after Eugene Stoner of Armalite invented the AR-15, which was built for the civilian market. (Although I am not positive, it is likely that Mr. Stoner went through several revisions of his design starting with a new, lower number, although it is unlikely that he used previously held numerical designators, such as M-1 and M-2.) When the U.S. Government adopted the model, they gave it a military designator (M) and upgraded the number from 15 to 16 due to modifications that were made to make the weapon applicable to its new military application. When Colt designed the M4, once again, several revisions to design changed the name until it finally arrived at its final designator of M (military designation) 4 (model number 4). Using this naming philosophy, future revisions of the M4 will most likely go M5, M6, M7, etc... UNLESS it is a simple revision of the exact same weapon, in which case it will receive a sub-designation of A1, A2, A3, A4, etc...
